Canon Medical Systems Group aims to provide products, services and solutions that incorporate elements of sustainability required by modern society. We believe overcoming challenges and providing value in line with a changing world through our business activities will lead to sustainable synergistic development of the company and society.
I see acting with integrity as the foundation of our sustainability efforts. We are transparent in our actions and aim to do what is right, as reflected in our Made for Life philosophy. We also account for our activities in this Annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report on our achievements and objectives.
2020 and 2021 were challenging years for all of us due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. It will continue to influence activities in 2022 and possibly beyond. I see our greatest achievements as our commitment to the health and safety of employees and our continued contributions to customers in the medical care sector. I am also grateful we could continue supporting communities worldwide. For example, when China faced a shortage of equipment to diagnose lung inflammation related to COVID-19, we were able to donate medical equipment to Wuhan.
Our focus for 2025 is to continue making progress in medical treatment with the aid of medical imaging, and to support the good health and wellbeing of patients together with our partners in scientific and clinical research.
Another challenge we see for society and our company is climate change. We have already been working on reducing CO2 emissions for quite some time by reducing energy use in our organization, generating renewable energy and designing environmentally friendly products that consume less energy.
Many countries and regions have set targets to reach carbon neutrality in 2050. Japan has pledged a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, but very little renewable energy is currently available in Japan where our largest production unit is located. Our facilities in the UK use 100% renewable energy and we aim to set a new mid to long-term CO2 reduction target next year for the entire group, including our production and supply chains in Japan, Malaysia, China and Brazil.

The last challenge I would like to highlight is a better gender balance in our company, as regards both the total workforce and management positions throughout the global group. We aim to further promote the creation of an environment where resourceful, qualified individuals can perform at their full potential regardless of their gender, culture or background.
Finally, a tremendous effort was made by the entire group in gathering information and contributing to the realization of this 2021 Annual CSR Report, which for the first time is based on the sustainability reporting guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Based on all of the input, we have also been able to determine a new CSR Policy for the entire Canon Medical Systems Group.
