Over 30 years of partnership and research collaboration
Canon Medical Systems ANZ, Monash Health, MonashHeart, Monash Imaging and Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre are celebrating over 30 years of association, partnership and research collaboration.
For the last 30 years, Canon Medical Systems and MonashHeart have had a long-standing partnership. We’ve worked together to develop innovative and cutting-edge technologies in interventions and imaging. This partnership has allowed MonashHeart to lead the way in diagnostic treatment of cardiac diseases and be in the forefront of research and development.
The partnership program established in Australia was to create opportunities for Canon Medical (formerly Toshiba Medical) to work with a range of specialists across many disciplines.
The aims of the program are to:
- Produce market-leading medical research that showcases the Australian and New Zealand community as global leaders in research and development.
- Undertake translational research pathways that sees a team collectively agree on the clinical question, the goal and the required outcomes based on validated discoveries.
- Undertake imaging research where there is a clear objective to improve diagnostic outcomes which in turn improve patient clinical outcomes.

Canon Medical and MonashHeart together have achieved significant milestones through collaboration in research.
Under the leadership of Professor James Cameron, Director of MonashHeart’s Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre, and Associate Professor Sujith Seneviratne, joint head of cardiac CT, a number of significant publications were produced that established MonashHeart in a world leadership position in cardiac CT.
One of the crucial outcomes was producing research for publication in peer review journals, local clinical white papers, clinical & technical case studies and other research related material. Using the data from Canon Medical’s Aquilion ONE 320-row CT scanner, 77 publications have been achieved in clinical areas including Cardiac, MSK, Respiratory and Oncology as of end of March 2017.
Benefits to patients that come from the truly translational research being carried out at MonashHeart has been and will continue to be the driving factor behind the program and the collaborative relationship between MonashHeart and Canon Medical Systems.
MonashHeart at Monash Health are established globally as innovators and leaders in advanced management of patients through the use of next generation CT. High quality education and educators have been supported through the Cardiac CTA program which in turn has provides a source of funds to invest in further education, research and equipment.
For Canon Medical the partnership has been beneficial in many ways not least the further development of CT as a critical diagnostic and interventional tool.
MonashHeart Education
CVCTA Education / MonashHeart Cardiac CT Courses
MonashHeart provides a cardiac CT course each year on site at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, Melbourne, Victoria on the Canon Medical Systems 640-slice Aquilion ONE ViSION CT scanner. The course is taught by highly experienced level B accredited faculty and includes exposure to and experience in cardiac CT imaging, coronary artery disease with catheter correlation, congenital heart disease and acquired non-coronary artery disease.
MonashHeart Mini Fellowship Courses
MonashHeart provides a number of cardiac CT mini fellowships options including 25 or 50 live/library cases. This enables achievement of level A or level B specialist training or re-accreditation requirements as required for conjoint committee recognition of training in CT coronary angiography.
