NEW CARDIAC CATHETER LAB AT LYELL MCEWIN HOSPITAL

North and North east residents with heart and other conditions will benefit from increased access to cardiology and interventional radiology services, following a $4 million investment for a second cardiac catheter lab at Lyell McEwin Hospital.

Under Transforming Health, the catheter lab has been installed at the hospital, allowing more local residents from the North and North east to receive urgent health assessment, treatment and care closer to home.

The new lab will result in a 30 per cent increase in the number of procedures involving interventional radiology.

Some of the heart procedures that will be carried out include internal measurement of the heart’s electrical activity to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms, pacemaker and defibrillator insertions and insertion of stents to unblock arteries to the heart that cause heart attacks.

The multi-purpose lab can be used to investigate and treat parts of the body other than the heart. It can be used for other radiological interventions, such as catheter insertions for medication administration, organ biopsy and non-cardiology vascular imaging.

Since 2002, $314 million has been invested in the Lyell McEwin Hospital over a continuous three stage redevelopment.
