MUTUAL BENEFITS: TOSHIBA MEDICAL & UTS SHAPE THE ENGINEERS OF TOMORROW

We spoke with Bryan Jago, National Service Manager, and Daryl Meppem, Branch Manager from Toshiba Australia’s medical division about their experience of sponsoring a UTS biomedical engineering scholar.

Why did Toshiba Medical Systems decide to sponsor a scholarship and what has your experience been to date?

Toshiba Medical has a considerable history of assisting the training of Australian youth through traineeships. Many of our former trainees are now full-time employees of Toshiba. However, this is the first time we’ve sponsored an engineering scholarship.

Along with our desire to be an active member of our society, we also hope to expand the horizons of engineering students through exposure to ‘real-world’ engineering practice in the field of diagnostic imaging.

Companies need to play a part in training and developing future generations of engineers. We highly recommend the UTS engineering and IT scholarship and internship programs.

We were delighted by the high quality of the candidates and found it difficult to choose only one scholarship winner. We finally chose Mimi, a biomedical engineering student.

Mimi has just started her first internship at Toshiba Medical Systems. She will work with experienced Service Engineers installing and servicing equipment in public hospitals and private facilities. Mimi is interested in how new technologies can integrate with human anatomy, and aspires to work either in medical diagnostic imaging or developing technology to improve patient quality of life.

The equipment she will work on includes: angiography, cardiac catheter labs, CT, MRI, ultrasound and advanced 3D imaging systems.
