INSTALL OF THE APLIO I800 AT THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT

ULTRASOUND ASSESSMENT OF ELITE ATHLETES

SYDNEY, March 5, 2018—The Australian Institute of Sport joins the global Sports Medicine network that utilises Canon Medical Systems imaging equipment for the assessment of elite athletes with the install of the new Aplio i800 i-series ultrasound system within the AIS High Performance Centre. The Aplio i800 is the premium system for MSK Imaging because of unparalleled image quality in visualising tendons and muscles. Unique advanced technologies, such as Superb Microvascular Imaging (SMI) provide unprecedented vascular and tissue details needed to treat and manage athletes for greater long-term health and performance.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr David Hughes said,“The Aplio i800 ultrasound system represents the cutting-edge of musculoskeletal ultrasound performance with SMI and contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) allowing AIS clinicians to image vascular changes in tendons with unprecedented clarity. The Aplio i800 enhances the ability of medical staff to give timely and accurate information to athletes and coaches regarding tendon pathology, thereby informing rehabilitation strategies.”

The AIS has long recognised the need to conduct applied research in an endeavour to understand the mechanisms that lead to improved performances in athletes and Canon Medical Systems ANZ is proud to be a strategic clinical research partner. 

The AIS constantly seeks to minimise time lost for training in competition. Tendon and other soft tissue injuries contribute significantly to lost training and competition time in high performance athletes. The AIS will be conducting world-first research on high-resolution imaging of tendon pathology, utilising the Aplio i800. Working in partnership with Canon Medical Systems ANZ, the AIS aims to remain at the forefront of tendon and soft tissue imaging techniques through its research projects. AIS will ensure that medical services provided to high performance athletes are consistent with world class best practice.
